How to get the gift right without asking

Asking works. It also ends the surprise, and the hint you drop in November is its own kind of spoiler. Here is what to do instead: what to notice, what to write down, and how the small questions get asked without you.

Why asking costs more than it looks

The moment you ask, they know something is coming and roughly what it is. The gift still arrives, but the part people remember, the second before the paper comes off, has already happened in October in a kitchen. And the workaround is worse: wondering aloud about boot sizes twice in one week is not subtle. There is only so often you can bring up musicals.

Notice in March, not December

A year is full of tells. A bowl picked up and put down in a shop. A musical mentioned twice. A jumper on someone else that got a second look. None of that is available in December, when you are standing in a shop trying to remember what they said in spring. So write it down the moment it happens, with one line on why it caught you, somewhere you will find it again. When an occasion comes round, the best of it goes on your list.

Rank, do not hoard

A list of 20 ideas is 20 decisions postponed until the week before. A list of 3 to 5, in order, is a plan. Ranking is the part that hurts, and it is also the part the shop will not do for you. Your list in WRAPT is exactly that: a short ranked list of ideas for the other, private, that they never see. Not before, not after, not once it is given.

Let someone else ask the small questions

Some things cannot be noticed. Sizes. Whether they still want the plant. Sunrise or sunset person. WRAPT asks them, as short questions on their phone through the year, ten seconds each. They tap an answer and get on with their day. You get the answer. The point is what they cannot see: which questions matter and which do not.

And if you both had the same idea

When the two of you give each other gifts on the same occasion, there is one more way to get it wrong: you both had it. The two lists are compared by a server that shows neither of you anything, and if the same idea is on both, it quietly sinks on one list. No message is sent, and nobody sees the other list. More on that here.
