When you both had the same idea
It happens more often than anyone admits, it is always told fondly afterwards, and it always costs one of you the gift you were proudest of. Here is why it happens, what the usual fixes cost, and the one way to stop it that keeps the secret.
Why the two of you land on the same idea
You share a life, so you share the evidence. The same shop window on the same Saturday. The same conversation in October where someone said they might finally learn to bake bread. The same friend who mentioned the same musical. Two people paying attention to each other will reach the same conclusions, which is lovely right up until 24 December.
The usual fixes, and what each one costs
- Write down what you want and share it. No duplicates, right sizes, and the surprise is gone by construction. You already knew.
- Ask a friend to referee. Now a third person holds both secrets, and you have to remember to tell them, and they have to remember not to tell.
- Buy early and hope. Whoever bought first wins. The other one finds out at the tree.
- Drop hints about what you are not buying. Now the hint is the spoiler.
What it looks like when a server does the refereeing
You each keep a short ranked list of ideas for the other. Neither of you ever sees the other list. The two lists are compared by a server that shows neither of you anything. Lion King tickets on one list and König der Löwen Musical on the other count as the same idea. If the same idea is on both, it quietly moves down one list.
No message is sent when it happens. The idea moves down that one list, and the other list stays as it was. The person whose idea moved can guess why. The other one never learns anything happened, and neither of you ever sees the other list.
Tickets are the expensive case
Two identical jumpers is a story. Two pairs of tickets for the same show on different Saturdays is a story that cost real money, is non-refundable, and is dated. It is the one case where a duplicate cannot be quietly returned in January, which is why WRAPT was built around it first.
If it already happened this year
Then first, congratulations, you clearly pay attention to each other. Second, there is a practical page for the morning after: you gave each other the same thing, now what.
