You gave each other the same thing. Now what?
Two of the same box under the tree. First, this is a compliment: you both paid attention and reached the same answer. Then the practical part.
Keep both, sometimes
If it is something that runs out, keep both and enjoy a very long supply. If it is tickets for different dates, you now have two evenings out. If it is the same date, two pairs of seats are a dinner with friends, and the friends will tell the story for you for years.
Return one, together
Most shops take an unused gift back within a few weeks with the receipt, and gift receipts exist for exactly this. Do it together rather than one of you quietly slipping out on 27 December: the point of the return is not to hide that it happened.
- Keep the box and the tags until you have decided.
- Check the window. Many shops extend it over Christmas.
- If one was bought online and one in a shop, return the online one. The postage is usually free and the shop trip is not.
Trade up
Return both and put the money on the one thing neither of you could justify alone. The duplicate turns into the gift you would have picked together, which is a better ending than one of you standing in a queue with a jumper.
Tell the story
Same-gift stories are among the good ones. Nobody tells the story of the year they got the right scarf. Write it down somewhere you will find it next December, and let it be the story of that Christmas rather than the thing that went wrong.
Next year
There is a way to make this much less likely without either of you giving up the surprise. You each keep a short ranked list of ideas for the other; a server compares the two and shows neither of you anything; and if the same idea is on both, it quietly sinks on one list. Nobody is told which. How that works.
